
Imo State is the first state in the entire South-East zone to hold the conference in the nation.
In Owerri, there are more than 400 editors from different parts of Nigeria.
In welcoming the editors to the state, Governor Hope Uzodimma proclaimed Imo a secure location for the conference and added that it continues to be the state with the fastest growth in the nation.
He mentioned instances of unfavorable and unconfirmed news about his state, particularly in relation to development projects and Nigerians’ sense of social togetherness.
According to him, “this is the time to uphold ethical conduct and industry sanctions against professional misconduct”
He advocated against announcing unconfirmed election results and the ownership stakes of media businesses.
He also asked them to refrain from contacting the political establishment directly with their findings.
He said: “Ensure credible, free and fair election in February, 2023 – Role of Editors very critical”
The National President of the Guild of Editors, Mr. Mustapha Isah, advised political parties to run issues-based campaigns in every region of Nigeria as the country prepares for the general election in 2023.
He counseled politicians not to inflame public opinion with controversial campaigns.
All Nigeria Guild of Editors has encouraged editors to make sure the elections in February 2023 are credible, free, and fair.
The conference’s Chairman, Prof. Stella Chinyere Okunna asserts that only the media has the ability to compile, organize, and distribute information to the public.
Furthermore, she urged Nigerians to choose trustworthy candidates for positions of power in the upcoming 2023 Elections.
