“Youths are the leaders of tomorrow” has become a cliche line in our society due to ageism – a pervasive pitfall that has plagued the world in all spheres of life.
Ageism is a stereotyping and or discrimination against individuals or groups on the basis of their age.
The theme for this year’s International Youth Day is “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages”, aims to create awareness of ageism and how ageism continues to lead to the disempowerment of both young and old. This year’s theme also aims at bridging the gap across all generations to advance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
To strengthen intergenerational solidarity in our society, we must work in unity to foster successful and equitable relations and partnerships to ensure “no one is left behind”.
We urge the political and economic institutions in our beloved Imo State to work together towards a society for all ages, one in which age-based stereotypes, prejudices and discriminations have no place.
